Gobustan, rock art and mud volcanoes.

Leave Baku towards Bibi-Heybat Mosque, continue to the mud-volcano area and the Gobustan rock-art reserve, then return to the city. Plan this as an excursion, not a city walk.

Use an organised tour or an agreed driver for the return trip. Access to wild mud-volcano tracks can require a suitable local vehicle; public transport still needs local transfers.

Distinguish the managed tourism complex from off-road volcano sites and agree the exact stop before travelling. Stay on permitted paths. Bring water and shoes that can get dirty; dress respectfully at Bibi-Heybat.

Places along the way

  1. Bibi-Heybat Mosque

The Bibi-Heybat Mosque is an active shrine on the coast south of central Baku.

  2. Gobustan Mud Volcanoes (Dashgil)

Mud cones and bare ground create a distinctive landscape in the wider Gobustan area.

  3. Gobustan Rock Art (Gobustan National Historical-Artistic Reserve)

Gobustan's rock art connects a landscape of stone with the lives of people across many millennia.
