Who is responsible?
The website operator shown below is responsible for the processing described on this page. Send privacy requests to the privacy contact address.
Pages, hosting and security
The server receives technical connection data, including your IP address, request time, requested page and browser information, to deliver the site and protect it against misuse. Technical error logs and logs maintained by the hosting provider can contain connection data; their retention depends on the production hosting configuration. The guide does not integrate advertising trackers or third-party analytics. Fonts, code, photographs and illustrations are served by this website.
Cookies and storage on your device
The lang cookie remembers your language selection for up to one year. The gt_sess session cookie protects forms and admin sessions; session data is configured to expire after two hours, subject to server cleanup. The team code is saved in your browser’s local storage so you can continue a quiz. The team code is sent back when you use the team API. The service worker can store visited pages and site assets for offline use. You can remove cookies, local storage and cached data in your browser settings.
Teams and quiz results
Creating a team stores its chosen name, route, language, progress, answers, score and creation time in the site’s SQLite database. Do not put your real name or contact details in the team name. Anyone with the team code can view its game progress; completed teams can appear in the leaderboard. The maintenance routine removes teams older than twelve months when it runs. A deletion request can be sent to the privacy contact with the team code. Backups can temporarily retain deleted data until the operator rotates or deletes those archives.
Visit counts and abuse prevention
The site records aggregate daily counts of page and station visits, language and the referring website’s domain where supplied. These counters do not store the visitor’s IP address. For request limits, the site stores a hash derived from the IP address and date; old rate-limit records are removed after twenty-four hours when the rate-limit routine runs. This pseudonymous protection is separate from any technical hosting logs.
Maps, images and external links
Photographs, illustrations and map code are served by this website. Viewing a photograph does not connect your browser to Wikimedia Commons or another image provider. Links to authors, licences, Wikimedia Commons and other sources open only when you follow them. OpenStreetMap tiles are requested only after you choose to load the map; your browser then sends connection data to the tile provider. Google Maps directions and official source websites also open only when you follow their links. The selected provider then receives connection data and applies its own privacy policy.
Audio guides and launch features
Available audio guides are prepared in advance with a synthetic voice and served as audio files by this website. Playback starts only when you choose it. Listening does not connect your browser to the speech-generation provider, request microphone access or upload your voice. A transcript is provided with each recording. An unavailable recording is marked as being prepared. The launch version does not accept photo-contest submissions, send voting emails or process payments.
Requests and your choices
Depending on applicable law, you may request access, correction, deletion or restriction of personal data, object to processing and contact a competent supervisory authority. For a team-related request, provide its team code without sending an account password. Loading an optional external service can be avoided by continuing to use the local page.
