The Gobustan National Historical-Artistic Reserve protects a UNESCO-listed rock-art landscape south-west of Baku. Its petroglyphs include people, animals, boats and other images carved across different periods.

The visitor museum provides context before the outdoor rock-art areas. Use marked paths, do not touch or mark the carvings, and plan transport for the journey beyond the city.

At Gobustan, history is recorded on the rock itself. The National Historical-Artistic Reserve protects a UNESCO-listed landscape southwest of Baku, with carvings made across different periods. People, animals, boats and other subjects appear among the petroglyphs.

Not every image is obvious at first. Give your eyes time to pick out lines and shapes rather than expecting the rock to read like a modern drawing. The visitor museum can provide useful context before the outdoor areas. Follow marked paths and leave the carvings untouched. This is a journey beyond the city, so arrange transport for the visit and the return rather than planning it as an ordinary city walk.
