The mud volcanoes around Gobustan are shaped by gas and mud rising through the ground. Their cones vary in size and activity, and the landscape can change over time. Small movements in the bubbling mud can be just as interesting as the wider view.
There is more than one kind of visit here. Managed visitor areas and the more remote natural fields have different access routes. Agree on the exact destination with your driver or organiser before setting out. Stay on permitted paths, keep away from unstable edges and fragile cones, and avoid driving off established routes. A careful view from solid ground is the way to enjoy this unusual landscape.
