Yanar Dag, or Burning Mountain, is a fire site on the Absheron Peninsula north of Baku. Natural gas seeping through the ground feeds flames along part of the slope.

It is a compact site rather than a large volcanic crater. Check visiting arrangements, keep behind barriers and allow transport time if you want to see it after dusk.

Yanar Dag means Burning Mountain. On the Absheron Peninsula, north of Baku, natural gas seeps through the ground and feeds a line of flames along part of a sandstone slope. The sight is quite different from a conventional mountain volcano.

This is a compact fire site, not a large crater to explore. Its interest lies in the relationship between the rock, the escaping gas and the flame. Watch from the designated visitor area and remain behind the barriers. If you would like to visit after dusk, check the current arrangements and plan the transport as well. The journey from Baku is part of the outing.
