The Ateshgah Fire Temple at Surakhani is a fortified courtyard complex associated with Indian merchants and pilgrims. Its surviving buildings mainly belong to the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
Displays explore the traditions connected with the site. The present flame is supplied by a gas line, so distinguish the historic natural-fire setting from today's visitor experience.

Ateshgah is a fortified courtyard complex at Surakhani, associated with Indian merchants and pilgrims. The surviving buildings mainly date from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Around the central fire altar, a ring of cells helps reveal how the complex was organised.
The inscriptions and displays offer clues to the traditions connected with the site. Fire is central to its story, but one detail is important: the flame seen today is supplied through a gas line. It should not be confused with the historic natural-fire setting. Looking at the courtyard, the cells and the altar together gives a fuller picture than focusing on the flame alone.
