Baku's Opera and Ballet Theatre was completed in nineteen eleven, during the city's oil-boom era. Its detailed facade belongs to the same broad period as many of the mansions and public buildings that changed central Baku.

Look beyond the shape of the entrance to the decoration higher up. The upper facade can reveal details that are easy to miss from the pavement. The theatre is a performance venue, rather than a monument with guaranteed daily sightseeing access. Programmes, restoration work and venue arrangements can change.
